This week it is Eli & Julia’s turn to present their entry on the novel PS I Love You, written by young Irish author Cecelia Ahern. As it is a really romantic novel the timing is very appropriate!
I leave you to it…
This book tells the story of Holly, a girl who was married to Gerry for seven years. Her life changes when her husband dies of a brain tumor. A few months before his death, both joking about the fact that he was leaving, they decided that Gerry had to leave Holly a list of things she had to do to when he’s gone. To what Holly was only a joke, was for Gerry a way to help his wife rebuild her life in his absence, because he knew he would die.
After Gerry died, Holly fell into deep sadness, lost the will to live and was missing something important in her life. She just wanted to spend the rest of her life in her apartment until she became old. A few months after his death Holly’s parents receive a package with “the list”. Then Holly remembers the day they joked about that… and finds out there is a total of 12 notes, to be opened one a month, so they will last for a year.
Following his directives she finds a job, travels to Spain, and learns to cope with a life without him… There is also a movie with the same name, and it is popular with teenagers.
An excerpt from the beginning of the novel…
Gerry was gone and he would never be back. That was the reality. She would never again run her fingers through his soft hair, never share a secret joke across the table at a dinner party, never cry to him when she got home from a hard day at work and just needed a hug; she would never share a bed with him again, never be woken up by his fits of sneezes each morning, never laugh with him so much her stomach would ache, never fight with him about whose turn it was to get up and turn the bedroom light off. All that was left was a bundle of memories and an image of his face that became more and more vague each day.
And here are some discussion questions for you:
1. If you were Holly would you be able to find support in your friends?
2. Why do you think Gerry left her all those letters?
3. Could you fall in love again after the death of your partner?
4. Do you think Holly will fall in love again?
This review was written by Eli & Julia, thank you girls!
